Button-Up Pouch

For beginner crocheters, a simple pouch/purse like this one is a good place to start. It’s easy to make, works up quickly, and you can practice basic construction of a crocheted project. It’s also a versatile project – you may choose to use it to hold makeup, to store crochet hooks, as a journal or book cover, or as an iPad case.

I used Debbie Bliss’ Bella yarn in burnt orange. It’s a DK-weight yarn made up of a cotton, silk, and cashmere blend and is machine washable. The yarn has a nice structure to it which works well for this project. I picked this up at Romney Wools in Toronto.

The pouch pictured here was made with a starting chain of approximately 7.3 inches for a snug fit around a standard iPad. To alter the size of the pouch, adjust the length of the starting chain, measuring it against the width of whatever you plan to store in it. The size of the rectangle you create is also up to you – keep crocheting rows if you want a tall, deep pouch and fewer rows to create a shorter pouch, perhaps for makeup brushes or crochet hooks.

This pattern uses half-double crochets for tighter stitches so that items placed in the pouch won’t slip through.

I found the buttons pictured below from Romney Wools. They are approximately 1 inch in diameter. You can use whatever buttons you like but make sure that the loops you create are sized accordingly. An approximate number of stitches for the loops is indicated in the pattern.

I’d recommend blocking the project before constructing the pouch to ensure that the edges match evenly and there isn’t any distortion. You may choose to braid or chain a purse strap to turn the pouch into an over-the-shoulder bag.
